Parody by QuinnA, LeannaC (2020)

Fourteen

I’ve grown a lot since I started using Pro Tools. When I first started, it was a challenge to even add a new track to the timeline or change the volume of individual clips. Now, I’m used to managing many tracks at a time and know how to add a master volume track to control the overall volume of every clip at once. Something I struggled with during this project was writing lyrics that fit the syllables the line required or that sounded natural in the song. My partner Leanna and I found ourselves going back and changing pieces that seemed awkward throughout the project. The thing that helped us overcome this the most was singing the verses to ourselves as we wrote. Something I actually would change would be the way I sang our parody song. I don’t have a very high vocal range and my partner cannot go very low, so if I went back, I would choose which lines we sang depending on who would be able to sing them the strongest rather than just switching back and forth. I’m proud of how much of the vocals I was able to take out, especially compared to the Beat It song I practiced with. Other than the chorus, you can hardly hear them. I can totally use this knowledge later on for future endeavors. Knowing the basics of mixing isn’t just for professional musicians. It can open a door to taking freelance jobs requiring you to make videos, which is something I’d love to do in the future to make some money. I noticed that this project really made me respect professional musicians. There’s so many different instruments and sounds they have to manage, and on top of that, everything has to work together as an overall composition. It took me an hour just to filter out vocals and add back bass, so I can’t imagine how long an actual song might take.
